I'm noticing a trend...

So last weekend when I was at LP's place for Halloween pumpkin carving, I met this guy who had what apparently is the typical Spanish reaction to Texans. After he asked me where I was from and I proudly told him, he made this terrible face. (If anyone has seen the Sex and the City episode "Critical Condition," you'll know what expression I'm talking about.) When I inquired as to why he had responded the way he did, he said it was because Texans are "close-minded Republicans that love George Bush." I'm a lover, not a hater, so although I wanted to comment that it was ironic that he was stereotyping others as close-minded when in fact he was the one being picayune, I didn't say anything. I figure people emanating such negative energy like that aren't worth my time. Alas, this kind of generalization seems to be a pattern here. Spaniards don't understand that everyone from Texas is not named Richard O'Hara:

Someone must have forgotten to tell them that The Simpsons is a satirical parody. While I don't deny that it's true that politically Texas is a red state, I find it insulting that someone would assume I'm a conservative simply because of my place of residence. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a member of the Democratic Party, and that I'm in no way a fan of W.

Ultimately, I find it unfortunate that there are such insular people in the world, but so it goes. I guess it's just a reminder for the rest of us to remain tolerant and unprejudiced.
