On page 17 of Jonathan Safran Foer's book Eating Animals, he recounts a story about his grandmother refusing to eat pork because she was Jewish, even though she was quite literally starving. He asks her, "But not even to save your life?" She replies, "If nothing matters, there's nothing to save." (Emphasis added.)
